Let's Start...

Written 9/13/05:

Well, I wanted to start this blog with something, and decided that I didn't know what I wanted to write about, on one of my email lists, I recently posted the following about religion, it's a bit out of context, but I hope interesting none-the-less:

A friend wrote:
>"I live my life according to the principles of science because
>science produces microwave ovens."

That's why people hang on to any tool or belief - It works for
them. As much as I don't like certain Christian Beliefs and
practices, I do understand that it fills a need in peoples lives. 12
Steps does for others, and Buddhism and Science does for others
still. Many of us mix and match.

Human beings are fundamentally all the same. Sex (both procreation
and recreation) and Spirit (Church, meditation, sports, school,
dancing, work, Psychology, etc.) appear as primary drives in all of
us.

What we are talking about when we discuss this stuff is the proper balance.

It's unfortunate that Christianity and a few other religions have at
their core the need "Convert" others to "Save" them. If they could
just accept that they are just one restaurant in a city of many
different flavors we might just get along.

They insist on their superiority over all others. Science, at times
behaves in this way. It's very difficult to deviate from accepted
thought in science. (As an example, I point out the man at UCSF who
theorized about Prions, years before Mad Cow Disease, he couldn't get
funding, but once there was a crisis, he got all he wanted, and his
ideas were suddenly scientific and accepted.)

Ridged beliefs are the problem, where ever they exist. (I wish I
could claim to be with out them, but I can't.)
