Violet Blue's comments on 2257 and Tribe -- written 12/16/05

Violet Blue's comments on 2257 and Tribe

If you haven't read it yet, it's a great post. She talks about how Tribe is imposing censorship on it's self and Members w/o being asked to by the government. She has changed my point of view.

I had originally thought when I first heard about Tribe's 2257 changes that, OK, they are a startup business, trying to get by w/o being hasseled, as they have better things to do, like get profitable.

But thinking about Tribe's ownership, (major media companies), I'm coming around to the idea that they are caving to preasure, rather than trying to establish new ways to determine community standards.

I should probably post this in Tribe ideas, but I think there should be a way to allow the community to vote for/against all content, with some standard such as a minimum of 25 votes (or 33% tribe membership - which ever is smaller), and a minimum voting period of 48 hours. (As long as community 75% supports something, it should be kept, as long as 50% support it, it should be shown only to "Mature" members.

Pictures (and other Media) should be certified to be 2257 compliant, and owned by the poster. Technical means should be simple to implement to support this. Tribe should also auto delete all pictures/media posted by members who terminate.

I would hope Tribe and it's corporate owners would try to be on the forefront of Free Speech. That's what I would hope Tribe is all about.
